Speak – Laurie Halse Anderson – Review

Score: 5/5

For me, this was an extremely intense independent read. I read it in 9th grade when I read this. I didn’t have any experience with the topic but the loneliness and depression I understood.

This follows Melinda a girl who is raped at a summer party. When she calls 911 to report the incident she doesn’t say why she’s called. The people at the party are upset with her for calling 911 so everyone shuns her.

Through her art class she is able to work through what happened to her. Through her silence that school year she is able to gain her voice, her strength to come to terms with what happened and to reach out to the people she once knew.
